Default RAF Regiment Mudguard

I recently obtained the pictured Regiment shoulder title. It is unusual as it does not have the standard embroidered border. The only time this was used, that I know of, was when the gold bullion version pictured was used on the 1947 pattern Officers tunic. Does anyone know what this strange version was used for?
