Default Can anyone help with this crest/tampion

Hi All,

This image of a tampion was forwarded to the Empire to Commonwealth Project. Can anyone identify the ship's crest this belongs to, please?

Many thanks for your help

+ Anthony

I would be looking at HMS Monmouth as the emblem is a Griffin similar to the one worn by The Monmouth Regt.(RE)

Not Monmouth. Her crest is a representation of the bridge/gateway over the river Mannow.

Nor Griffin - her's is a Griffin rampant with no motto

By the way what does the motto say; that would be a help.

I have a book of all official ships badges 1919-1994 but it is not indexed by device and looking through it is a huge hit and miss task. I'll happily look up any other suggestions and have a browse later on today.

Actually didn't take all that long. I reckon there are only two possibilities:

Cambrian - crest is the Dragon of Wales. Approved 1921. Ship also has a three word motto: Parvas Par magna - Of small people I am a great part.

Dragon - crest is ... a dragon passant (walking) approved 1919. Motto: we yield but to St George.

My money - if I had any - would be on Cambrian.

Hi,

'Loyal Devoir = Loyal Duty' was the first motto of HMS Grenville. Note: HMS Grenville's badge was the pre 1919 un-offical ship's badge for HMS Revenge.

At this time I cannot pin the badge down to either Grenville or Revenge.

Hope this helps!

Regards
Arthur

Dear Arthur,

THANK YOU for your Email and photos! It was a 100% match with the tampion I had so thanks for solving this mystery!

I'm putting the answer up on the Empire to Commonwealth Site.

Thanks again,

+ Anthony
