Default Button makers

I recently bought a collection of badges and buttons and was amazed at the different makers of basically the same button:

Beds & Herts Regt: J.R. Gaunt & Son, C. Pitt & Co Ltd, Smith & Wright Ltd, The Army & Navy Supply Stores, Buttons Ltd, H. Gill & Whitehouse Ltd, J. Samuel and one with a plain back.

North Stafford Regt: J.R. Gaunt & Son London, C. Pitt & Co Ltd, Q.M. Stores Aldershot, Jennens & Co, Firmin & Sons, Hawkes & Co. Pitt & Co and some with Plain back.

There are slight differences in some of the buttons as well such as the knot in the centre of the North Staffs buttons. Do other people collect different makers?

Default Button Makers

Sure! I often wonder if I'm bordering on becoming an "Anorak" Though I only collect Artillery, I have the same findings as you..Many makers, and then, many different styles of the same maker's mark. Just research "Firmin" and you'll see what I mean! Regards, David J.

Hi Rob

Nothing wrong with having an anorak or two.

I have been collecting Devon button makers for quite a while, and then of course there are these.

And lately I am being outbid on Ebay more often with these items so I would say its a growing interest

Talking Anorak . . !

Rob, I don't know whether I will be taking quite this level of interest, I bought a biscuit tin full of badges and buttons although generally to four different units, with a few other odds and ends as well.

As I went through the items I noticed the different makers names and noted them down, it was raining at the time, so my gardening was on hold.

I am looking for a WD surplus anorak for wet days . . !
