Hi,
Looks to be a very early British Merchant Navy button. May even possibly be a pre-1812 RN officers button GTB |

I suspect from the closed back and rear markings it dates from the Victorian period.
But I don' know who wore it? Rob |

Vide 2 buttons in same website for RN Capt /Commander pre 1787. Also note that backmark predates the 1900s by alpprox a century,

Almost all pre 1800 buttons are single or two pieces buttons struck in shallow relief and on the flat. The piece ones are usually a thin foil on a wood or horn back.
The rear marking of double or treble gilt was a universal marketing term used from early/mid 19th century right up to the 1920's for generic buttons and widely found on british and american manufacuters. The picture refered too is definately an error placing it in that group. |
