Thanks for your comments gentlemen it's been most edifying not necessarily about my query as none of my questions were answered but more about human nature.Roger

That said, its value would be in most cases lower than if it had its original fitting. Most of this type of work was done to make the more convenient as a sweetheart badge, which is likely the case with this one, given the type of broach fitting that it has. However, some badges, frequently Scottish, were modified with pins for service use as a preference. Usually the pin is different however. CB |

The other Hampshire's badge is a common regulars' worn from the late Victorian period through them becoming the Royal Hampshire Regt post WW2. The lower part is a gilding metal overlay which they're all like other than the all nickel WW1 VTC.

In the same vein, but changing the theme slightly, there was a Victoria Crown Border Regiment badge "sanctioned/approved/receiving approbation or whatever it should be called on here very recently. Subsequently it was offered on ebay and at the same time there were 2 or 3 others of the same quality being offered. The others are still on there or didn't sell and removed, the one shown on here and receiving approval did sell for more than quite a bit more than the others. Madness; Lunacy; Ridiculous and Absurd are adjectives that have been used in relation to this siuation in the last few posts; well chosen words......In my opinion they sum up the position perfectly. Is this the way forward?...........The Forum being used as a clearing house and a medium for free advertising prior to items being offered. Not good. Regards Brian |

No it isn't and to my mind this is not what the forum is about. Opinions on whether a badged is good or not are sometimes interesting - but not necessarily definitive...... - apart from those badges which have been discussed - makers marks etc and can (usually) be found via searches etc. If someone wants to know about value/'genuioneness' for insurance purposes, get it authenticated. Yes it costs. I had to pay a specialist organisation in order to get a "certificate of authenticity" for specific stamps (the BPA - one of two that do this for Brit Emp. stamps). There are also a number of catalogues which at least provide a 'range' of values (Stan Gibbons). However, when I posted these comments a few years ago. It died a death. One of these days, this is going to have to happen..... I believe I see a business opportunity here somewhere.......... Maybe I should post pictures of every one of my badges and request a valuation before setting a start price on ebay. Wouldn't that be fun? I am personally very suspicious about postings that are along the lines of "what is this worth" etc etc etc. The stock answer to these sorts of questions should be "whatever someone is willing to pay for it". That's it from me for the week. To my forum and real friends, Ciao. And good hunting - whatever it costs you....... |

When the member started posting large numbers of threads about badges, it was soon pointed out by another member the said badges were promptly appearing on ebay. I then started receiving pm's about this suggesting something be done. But what? As he was doing what hundreds have done before (but perhaps on a larger scale) we couldn't say you can't do this.
Now the other side- many members seemed interested in seeing the photos and responses - so we have the usual two camps problem. My solution was to create a temporary forum to put it all in, then if you don't like it you don't need to go there, and it prevents flooding and drowning out the other sections for the regulars. (A secondary reason from an admin point of view, that since the member has chosen not to upload the pictures into the thread via the forum, all the pictures will expire and the threads will become useless so most will be deleted)

In regard to the question of a brooched badge & how it's value is affected is a difficult one - I have very recently asked a similar question regarding a medal I have that has been removed from its suspender. I wasn't asking about the affect it has on value but whether it was worth trying to find an appropriate suspender & having it put back to it's original state. The response was very mixed with people stating that the cost may outweigh the value to put it right & also that the medal was altered by a family member so should be left that way.
I guess it comes down to what you want to do with it - for me it is a nice item to do a bit of research on - & before someone asks, it was a Victorian Volunteer LSGC marked up to the 21st Middlesex RV Regards.....Andy |

The reason I asked about the regular Hampshires badge was whilst I have a few others this is the only one that had lugs prior to it being brooched and I wondered if it could be an Edwardian one, also with the gilding if you look at the back of the badge the gilt goes up to the top of the rose and upto the top of the first row of leaves,I again wondered if it was because this was an earlier badge.Roger

Hi Roger
I have had a few badges that were brooched like this, easy to put back to their original state, but although it tends to de-value them a bit I prefer to leave them as is, after all, they were converted a long time ago, probably for the soldier to give to a loved one and as such represent a part of social history Lee |

I dont think its brens fault the badge reached the price it did after all he did start it at £4.99 its not him playing us for mugs its the bidders themselves. As for postage charges hes up front so you have a choice bid or dont bid. By the way mate i already know your stance in this matter Malc ps nice additions to your Albums
