5th VB Devonshire
Any thoughts on the 5th VB badge sold by Bosleys recently, is it possible that two completely different types could be issued in the six years 1902-1908?
It has a "long" slider, could that mean it was for the Brodrick? did the Volunteers use the Brodrick? Rob http://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/au...1-a56000c9c527 |

Not usually as they had a preference for the slouch hat post Boer War and the FSC.

Hi Andy
I agree, DCLI and Manchester Regiment to name but two, but it doesn't prove anything. I have to say its a pretty poor picture on Bosleys site, I have never bought from there but I assume you get better pictures before you bid? I suppose Its always possible that this one is genuine and all the others are the fakes. Rob |

I have a suspicion that it was only the 3-5th Bns that had overlaid scrolls.
1st was a Rifles Bn so may have worn BB badges (same as 4th TF Bn from 1908) and the 2nd wore the plain w/m badge (same as the 5th Bn from 1908). I would be grateful if anyone can confirm what 1 Vb and 2Vb wore. |

Hi Alan
Colin Churchill's collar badge book offers the best clues in my opinion, he says the 1st VB Bn wore a WM version of the standard GM Devon collar, it seems unlikely that they would have worn a BB cap badge with WM collars. As to the 2nd, their collars were WM POW feather's so its possible they wore a WM POW cap badge to match, I think Kelly College were connected to the 2nd VB Bn, what era did they wear their POW cap badge? As the 4th TF was the senior TF wore a rifles BB I had presumed that 1VB had the same BB but the collars does suggest otherwise. So where did the 4th TF rifles lineage come from?
Kelly College OTC wore a blackened PofW feathers but I don't know from when. |

Westlake's Tracing the Rifle Vols states that the 1VB was the 1 Devonshire RVC so they had the Rifle heritage. Uniform was green tunics and black collars etc.
Westlake also states that 3VB also became part of 4 TF Bn. 3Vb also wore grey uniforms with green collars etc. Last edited by Alan O; 28-05-16 at 05:55 PM. |

Hi Keith
Was the 2nd VB on a separate scroll or on the scroll which normally carries the "ICH DIEN"? Rob |

A new purchase, the top of the crown is bent inwards which is fairly common on slidered badges but I've not seen it on a lugged badge before?
The two holes are in the wrong place for a VB bar? And its from the same dies as this badge converted to brooch fitting. Rob |

I suspect the 2 hole and the cut-off lugs are because it was been nailed to a display board at some time in your life. This was not uncommon in the distant past. Alan |
