Argyll and Sutherland Cavalry...Fire Brigade?
There's so much wrong here I don't know where to begin.
https://www.liveauctioneers.com/item...cavalry-helmet Any solid info on what the helmet began life as? Also, is that Greek writing on the paper label? I'd like to email the auction house, with whom I've had previous (positive) dealings. They're clearly out of their depth on this one! |

Probably a Bavarian helmet which has had the comb removed, look for traces of the lines of stitching and /or bolt holes which hold the original comb on.
Many of them appear to have been adapted for fire service use after they were replaced by the pikelhaube with top spike. Personally I wouldn't want to buy this thing - the copper and bristle comb looks like it's just made up out of scrap, the various bits of insignia may be original pieces but not to this helmet, the chain is probably from a DIY store, the shiny silver coloured screws are brand new. Its rubbish, the only reason to buy it that I can see is to "restore" it if it cost just a few pounds - but literally, just a few pounds. Last edited by leigh kitchen; 21-10-20 at 06:40 AM. |

Oh, I have no intention on bidding on that thing. Rather I was wanting to be pretty thorough with my debunking, although I think the poorly cast A&SH badge (brass, no less) and the crude copper comb should be enough.
I've emailed the auction house. I'll be curious to see what transpires. |

I can't make out details of the A&SH badge etc.
I'm thinking that the auction house won't give a monkey's if they're advised that this helmet is worthless tat? Call it Steam Punk and that'll probably legitimise it. |
