Ghanaian Medal for service with the U.N. in the Congo 1960 to 1964. I will admit to not knowing all the criteria for this medal but must assume like other contingents it was for 3 or 6 months service. The pin clasp is marked Spink & Son Ltd 5 King St. S.W.l.
The Ghanaian government in 1960, then only an independent nation for 4 years, decided to contribute soldiers to the UN peacekeeping efforts in the Congo..Sadly the Ghanaian troops would suffer one of the deadliest attacks during the mission. In April of 1961 the Mobutu lead Congolese Army attacked Port Francqui which was manned by 90 Ghanaian soldiers as well other peacekeeping troops. 47 soldiers were killed during the attack, 43 among those were from Ghana.
