Is dragonz18 still around? I believe you are in NZ. How come NZ Arty stuff is so hard to find, somebody must know of a reputable dealer there. Corbett's book shows a lot of nice pieces.
Here's three more S.African pieces. |

Many thanks to 54Bty for your answer via private message. I think this old fella has found out how to navigate this site at last and hope to be able to continue this most interesting thread concerning Artillery badges.

Carrying on from a private response I've had, What do members feel about "Private Purchase" badges? It occurs to me that if the badge does not conform exactly to MOD specs (or whom ever the issuing authority is in other countries) then is it a valid part of a collection or should it be segregated?. Seven of my RHA badges (and one RCHA) now appear to fall in that category.

Hi Artynut, as for the validity of private purchase items put it this way...
When I joined 7 Para RHA the 1st thing I was told was to get down to the PRI shop and get that ******* cheap and nasty AA issue capbadge out of my beret and get a decent one, more fitting for the Right of the Line. Thereafter a nice thick white metal private purchase cypher was worn in my beret throughout my career. The other choice was for SNCO's who could get away with a polished Brass one. I still have my best beret and wear it on 11/11 and someday it'll be a dead mans beret and I'd hate to think that some collector would remove my badge and replace it with a AA one because he thought it was correct (Plus my BSM would also be spinning in his grave.). If the badges where worn then they are valid. Most Officers uniforms and insignia, including cloth beret badges, are private purchase, Gieves & Hawke etc. It would be a sorry collection not to include them, because the QM didn't issue them. |

Thanks for that TynesideIrish, That's about how I felt but did not want to be castigated (or castrated!) by other members for including them in any pics I send in.....BTW, Are you really an Irish Geordie? (Hope that's not too personal). David J.

A short not about the "Correct" badges worn. I joined the RA (TA) in '62 and the beret badge I was issued was a brass "King's" Crown with slider and lugs. (I still have that in my collection) Of the two badges I was issued previously in the RAF, the first was "Kings" Crown. The first W/O that I met when wearing that sure let me know what he thought of someone purporting to be "an Old Sweat" In retrospect, I wondered if the storeman was onto a good racket!

Hi TinesideIrish, thanks for your reply. Guess this thread is drying up but thought you might be interested in these badges I've just scanned. BTW, my Dad worked in the "Vickers Armstrong" shipyard during WW1....David J.

Hoping the experts can tell me whats good or bad about this lot. The flat faced w/m one has N-S lugs and the deeper rounded faced one has E-W lugs.
There are no makers marks on any. David J. |

David,
nice SAA badges you've shown. The Cape Colony KC & the KC TA , are 2 that I would still like to find. I'm afraid that I am not too familiar with the others( & SA badges in general), though I did have a 'Spec Bona' collar badge for the Capetown University unit at one stage.Any interesting history for this unit? Is the gun meant to be painted on the 1st CUA badge ? Glad to see this thread has durability & there is still a great deal more to be shown & discussed,I'm sure. Cheers ! Hi Steve, And all interested parties, yes, that blue paint was original and I' been assured it's correct. I can consult with a more knowledgeable friend who would give me the story behind all of my S.A. stuff. He put my mind at rest about the horrible stamping of the first badge in the next four scans, though my all time favorite one is the W/M one. It's such a beautiful crisp striking, back and front. The wheels on the cast one and the fourth one are centrally pinned and move nicely.

I don't know if this one has been considered yet. I thought at first that it was some sort of pouch badge, although as the gun is facing the wrong way it is perhaps more likely to have been a collar badge (?)

It's a sergeant's arm badge, right side - muzzles always forward!

Thank you - I have added the picture to the albums section, with the caption "A Royal Artillery sergeant's arm badge".

David, Nice badges. The 1st, 3rd and 4th are capbadges the 2nd is a collar. Nothing dodgy as far as I can see. The easiest way to see if an RHA Cypher is Issued or Private purchase is the garter belt end. I've used 2 of your pics for ease of example. On issued badges the belt end is tucked away under the garter. Non crown makers are not allowed to use this Royal Garter and so the belt end is looped over the garter. |
