91st Argyllshire Highlanders. Large badge. Age and purpose?

I am wondering about the date of use, and on what type of headdress or other equipment (i.e. glengarry, helmet puggaree, cross-belt, etc) this badge would have been worn?

It bears the title "ARGYLLSHIRE HIGHLANDERS" with Roman numeral "XCI" in centre, on reversed, mirrored, cursive "L" cypher. It measures 72 mm (2.86 inches) high X 55 mm (2.15 inches) wide. It is of one-piece construction in non-sterling silver, possibly coin-grade silver or white metal. Long, hinged pin and "C" catch-loop on the reverse for attachment. It was found by a friend in an antique shop in former British India.

There is some compression damage on the front 10 o'clock position, mirrored on the reverse (2 o'clock). Also, a small cut on the reverse at 9 o'clock, I surmise, as though someone were testing the metal composition.

The only thing that comes to mind is a possible mess waiters badge.
The title would suggest pre 82, but it was common for each battalion of combined post 82 regiments to sport their former number and title on Pagri flashes and mess waiter badges well into the 20th C.
