Default CEF member wearing Gordon Highlander cap badge?

http://www.flickr.com/photos/streetc...7611500158287/

My grandfather, W.J.A. Stewart joined the CEF via the 63rd Halifax Rifles, into the 17th Reserve Battalion in East Sandling, UK and then the CMGC. The link above shows him at East Sandling wearing a cap badge that looks distinctly Gordon Highlander. The only thing close for the CEF is the 72nd Seaforths, but there is no 72 above the stag head.

Possible? Comments?? Any help appreciated..

Scott

I'm thinking 3rd Machine Gun Company. They wore a large white metal badge which I have seen in photos on a balmoral suggesting they were dressed as Highlanders.

Follow this link to see the badge in the CEF Gallery:

One thing I forgot to mention..... other men in the 63rd Halifax Rifles in the 17th Reserve Battalion kept their uniforms and badging, which we have pictures of. Somehow my grandfather got the highland gear for whatever reason ..... and reverted back to the standard CEF uniform and CMGC badging when he transferred to the 12th Company, 4th Battalion, CMGC.

An observation for consideration. The 17th Bn was a Seaforth Highlanders battalion. The badge in question may be a 17th Bn badge, but with something covering the top portion? As a highland bn, members of the battalion were likely allowed to wear kilts and highland kit. In comparison to the other fellows, he appears to be of smaller stature, and there may have been highland kit in smaller sizes while the regular or larger sizes were unavailable.

The 17th Bn does not have that much voiding in the badge. My money is still on 3rd Machine Gun Company.
