Stephen,
at 5.6cm its probably too small to be a plaid brooch, perhaps a sporran badge that was converted to a brooch. Why don't you rather post onto the section "Its a mystery - unknown badges for identification." It'll get more exposure, or even in the infantry section. Iain

BAOR Pipe Band
In the Pipers' Badges Project there is a badge "British Army of the Rhine Pipe Band". Who used that badge? I would expect that the regiments/units that were at the time part of the BAOR woul keep their own badge.

Hi Aboode
From what I understand, the BAOR pipe band was made up of enthusiasts from different regiments etc that possibly would not traditionally have had pipe-bands. I don`t think it was a totally official band. Cheers, Alex |

SAMS 1med batt pipeband
Hi,
Here are some pics of the South African Medical Services (1 Medical Battalion) pipe band based in Durban. The cap badge is the regular SAMS cap badge worn against McKenzie tartan and on a maroon glengarry. The pipers also have a plaid brooch, but I do not have a picture of it. For more info go look at there website http://1medpipeband.co.za/ Steven |

Hi,
Here are some pics of RAMC pipers badges. Thes were found at various web sites years ago and are not mine, but nice for reference. Steven |

Hi Steven,
I didnt know the SAMS had its own pipe band. They used to say if you get a few Scotsmen together they form a regiment. But maybe if there's a few Scotsmen already in a regiment, they form a pipe band! The RAMC plaid brooches are very nice; I bet you wished you had those and not just the pictures! Iain

Hi Iain,
Yes a few of these would look good in the collection SAMS had a CF brass band in the 60's and 70's. Not sure when this was disbanded. The pipe band started sometime in the 80's. While doing medical basics in Klipdrift in 1987 the pipe band came recruiting, especially looking for pipers. Not sure whether they got any though. Steven |

i think you may have an old scan of one of my badges looking at the over casting between the serpant and the rod. Better scans attached. Badge is cast but i am assured that this is correct, can anyone confirm please. Cheers, Dave

Hi Dave,
Thanks for the better scans. Yes the one I have is very old. I would say these were produced in very limited quantities and therefore cast. Looks good to me. Steven |

Hi Alex,
Good to hear you are a piper. A picture of the brooch would be great as well as pics of any other unique insignia of the unit. In fact any decent pics of the unit in its various uniforms would be appreciated. I believe the uniforms have changed many times during its existance. Steven |

There is actually a picture of Alex if you follow the link that has been posted.
It does seem to me that a number of military Pipes and Drums seem to be changing their uniforms and making them similar to those worn by civilian pipers and drummers and thereby loosing a lot of the old military items of kit. Is this a result of the cost of some items ? P.B.

Further to my last post, here are pictures of the some members of the Pipes and Drums of the Lancashire Artillery Volunteers in 1990 ( black and white photo ) and a more recent colour photo.
The difference in the uniforms is remarkable. P.B.
