A very good book I was recomended as an all rounder is "Military Badge Collecting " by John Gaylor isbn no 0850527589, you should find a good secondhand copy on ebay. And welcome to the best forum going.

Hi sire, if your budget will stretch to it, go for the kipling and king books volume
one and two, which will cover most cap badges and in the long run may save you money

I started with John Gaylor and it was fine when I moved from picking up the odd badge to thinking of a collection. Its certainly cheaper.

K&K is the one everyone quotes all the time. People talk of K&K 920 when they mean Welsh Guards for example.

To be honest this site is better than either of them.

Default Badge collecting Books

I have both the Kipling and King books, and Gaylor`s book these are good books especially K & K. None of these books have any info about the Makers of the Badge`s, unfortunately.

I liked Peter Doyle and Chris Fosters' book on First World War badges (reviewed here before on the Forum). Good photography and good general information. Probably a good start. David

O yes, I have seen it. I would agree with you if they care enough to print a little big bigger photos. . I mean as a reference the book is good, but for collecting purpose, you can't see a thing

I agree with David, Doyle's book is very good for WW1. I have Gaylor, but Doyle's is excellent for a general collection, of every regiment in WW1.

If your going to collect every version, rank etc; then true it's a basic book, but an excellent read and perfect for a specific intent to collect WW1.

Regards
Simon.

Thanks for your comment - a little odd, considering the badge pictures are in full colour, in focus, and larger that those in KK and Gaylor. So to say you can't see a thing is pushing it a bit, really. It's not what we care to do, of course, its what the publishers can manage, while making an affordable book that will sell.

Strangely enough, we received an Amazon review with one star for the self same reason - I must admit I dismissed it on the basis that the reviewer ('Carrot Liberation') was having a bad day. I hope so (wouldn't be you, would it?)

Peter

I have just relocated my copy of British Military Badges, a collector's guide by Keith Rawlings. It sits alongside other works and covers the Hampshires rather well.
Beware, the covers come off rather easily.
