MM to the welsh regt.
My Grandfather was
Harry Morlais Evans Born 24 May 1897 Merthyr Tydfil Address 24 Kemble Close Potters Bar (1933-1972) Served in 5th WELSH Regiment or 1st Welch Regiment On the 2nd November 1917 private 240860 H.M. Evans showed conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. A letter dated November 15th 1917 to his father has the following Dear Mr Evans, Just a line to let you know that your son has been awarded the military medal for gallantry and devotion to duty in the field. During the recent fighting, in which our battalion was engaged, he took charge of a Lewis gun, whose gunner had been killed, and kept down heavy Turkish enfilade fire, from which we were suffering, and later in the day by use of his gun enabled all the wounded to be evacuated from an advanced position, remaining out till they were all withdrawn. He was presented with the ribbon by G.O.C. Division yesterday. Everyone here is delighted that he has received an honour which he so thoroughly well deserved. Yours sincerely Lieut. R. Frost. Can anyone access any online records that will tell me which batt. he served in and is the date correct for the MM. Happy new everyone. |

1/5th Bn, Egypt. London Gazette 19/3/18 so late 1917 award seems correct.
Great War Forum or British Medals Forum would give you a better response! Charlie Last edited by charlie962; 02-01-17 at 08:28 PM. |
