Original Gaunt tablet removed?
Are there any thoughts on this 11th Lonsdale cap badge?
Looks to me that someone has removed the original Gaunt tablet for one reason or another Tony.

Greetings Tony.
Probably because it is not an original badge. Most obvious clue to being a wrong 'un, is the angle of the tail; if the front were shown, I have no doubt other details can be pointed out. Regards. Brian. |

Hi Brian,
Here is the badge in question

Could be day 10 covid affecting my senses but to my eyes that’s an original badge. Missing a bit more than just the tablet mind. Saw a pair of these surface on eBay about a month ago, both expensive given they were practically half a badge.
You can just see the rectangular outline centre of the Griffin where the plaque was. |

Agreed Luke, here's my 'part example' bought at an antique fair in Liverpool, those were the days
Also agreed tail on this one not at same angle as one in post #1. Tony.

Greetings again.
I stand by what I stated in my earlier reply, the badge shown in the original post is a wrong 'un. I'll post pictures of a genuine item later today for comparison. Other indicators to support my belief: The angle of the uppermost digit on the raised front leg and the angle of that leg. Also lack of voiding between the neck and wing. Regards. Brian |

The tail and digits have been knocked/bent.
The badge is original. |

Who would do a thing like that, I wonder?

Kids, some plank who doesn't know what he's doing or someone who does but wants to rehome the plaque to make a badge just that little bit better.

I suspect the latter!

As well as the correct positions of both tail and front upraised leg, note the voiding between neck and wing on each.
OR rear.jpg OR's OR's.jpg OR's rear Officer's.jpg Genuine Officer's Fake.jpg Fake Officer's. It is possible, however, that this item could have been chromed or plated and a false hallmark impressed in the correct place, as there are small indications of a darker metal in places when looked at closely. I still believe the badge in the opening post is wrong. Regards. Brian |

Whilst I cannot comment as to whether the badge in question is original or not, I must say it is one of the poorest quality badges I have seen. The second badge presented as well.
I cannot imagine why Gaunt would apply a plaque to such a crudity. If these badges are indeed original, they are starring example of why one cannot judge a badge on the basis it's quality. I have avoided the temptation to acquire this badge as I have never been sure enough to pull the plug. CB

All the GM badges shown in this thread are from the same die. The voiding is I believe attributable to a separate batch. To date all the badges I’ve seen with the void have the Gaunt tablet attached on the scroll’s central knot whereas the unvoided ones have the tablet behind the beast’s body.

Another GM badge from last Bosley’s auction also with a knocked tail and no void.
