Default Royal Regiment of Fusiliers "Hat Badge".

"Fusiliers Direct" the online RRF shop run by "AMMO & Co Ltd" is selling these screw post badges as "hat badges" "Cap Badge - RRF Other Rank's - Screw Fitting"

The blackened and the gilt and silver" new metal badges with long flat lugs and hackle fittings they sell (at £7.95) are labelled as "beret badges" (well, ok, the black one is labelled as a beret badge for "recce" and "snipers" or whatever).

I don't know what the purpose of this "hat" / "cap" badge is as RRF doesn't wear "caps", other then the Fusilier Cap.

I don't know what size the badge is but at £6.99 I doubt it's a return from the narrow flame RRF Fusilier Cap badge to the big old wide flame Fusilier Brigade Fusilier Cap badge.

The placement of the screw post fittings indicate that it isn't worn with a hackle.

RRF have plenty of previous for wearing beret badges with dangerously long fittings but is it a badge worn on uniform headgear?

It wouldn't sit well on a veterans baseball cap either, and they're unescessarily long for a belt plate or car badge, perhaps for a Drummers crossbelt?

I'll ask Fusilier Direct what the badge is intended for.

Default 'Cap badge'

I believe 'cap badge' can be a generic term for badges worn on headgear.

Did Fusiliers never wear a peaked cap with No 2 Dress post-1945?

Could be for the waist belt plate but the screws look a bit long.

Doesnt look right for a belt plate badge. Usually the short stubby 'rectangular lugs' (there are 2 versions in the anodised badge being North &South and East & west).

Could these be for despatch pouch (prussian box) or whatever the correct term is, for No.1 dress or bandsmen etc?

Couldnt be worn on a beret, surely?

A lot of the newer WBC badges are on screws now. The PWRR and The Rifles both have screwpost waist belt badges.

Indeed this is the current PWRR belt plate with the badge on two screw posts which have had the excess sawn off after fitting.

I think that could well be it. The description "cap badge" could well mean the same size and design as. The fittings arent for a cap badge clearly.

Just a thought.
Maybe it secures the hackle better?
The only cap badge I have with a screw post is a present day Royal Marines Officers anodised badge, no more silver and gilt! It's on the separate crown and lion part.
Is the badge shown the same size as the normal cap badge?
Cheers
Chris

I bet the screwpost is for the cap Chris,I presume that they still also issue the lion and crown on the pin which would suit the beret ?

That would make sense that it's for the cap, I do have a pin anodised crown and lion.

In 1979 I picked up a couple of gold anod RM officers dog in a baskets from 40 Commando stores in Shackleton Barracks, Ballykelly, the Colour Sergeant told me that they were worn in the forage cap and sometimes the beret and that the version with the pin was being replaced by the version with the screw post.

I got one or two of each, I think the pins were 45p, the screw posts 73p.

He said that some officers wore the Other Ranks gold anod al collar badge as the globe and laurel part of the cap badge instead of the correct officer's gold and silver colour collar badge / part of the cap badge as they were cheaper to buy.
