Default Anson RND

Carrying on from the interesting thread on Drake - here's what I hope are a couple of thought provoking scans. Without looking at the reverse which do you think is the fake Anson? (I'll say one thing the one on the left appears exactly the same as plhoto 396 of the 9th Edition of Wilkinson's Badges of the British Army....ummmm!). Cheers
Mark

Default Anson Cap badges

Not all Anson badges were made by Gaunt, who the other maker(s) were I have no record of, not all Gaunt plaqued badges had reinforcing rods either, whether these were made at the time of manufacture or a later addition by the wearer is a matter of speculation.

The spear point is a very vulnerable piece of this design and no doubt complaints were raised with the manufacturer.

I'd say the left hand badge (first picture) is the duff one as it has the over-large, rounded end lettering of modern fakes.

Thanks for the comments gents - yes it's the one on the right. Though I was hoping someone would have said "hey they are both original". Notwithstanding Sonofacqms's wise words I guess it's going to go back in the restrike and forgeries tin with all the other tat (though it appeared a good strike of a restrike for all that if you ken what I mean). Intersting comment about the rounded ends on lettering. I'll watch out for that.

Smile Anson badge

While I do not profess to know all about RND badges (or any other unit) I would be careful about discarding the badge without the Gaunt plaque, the picture once again did not show the loops clearly to my mind, a shot taken at an angle reveals far more than one taken directly above, this shows hopefully the base of the loops which is more revealing as to the originality of the badge.

While the Gaunt plaques do tend to add authenticity to RND badges, I do believe these to have been used by the unscrupulous fakers. There were, I think other makers, as to whether the lettering was exactly the same I would not like to say. I was trained as a Compositor many years ago, studying lettering, styles etc, long before PC's came along.

I collect badges with different styles of letters used and spellings, plus the mistakes ("e" missed out in Cambridgeshire). The variations are quite remarkable and whilst a badge may have letters different to others, I would not dismiss it out of hand as a restrike.

Default Anson

Just a couple of pictures of a badge that i picked up, the gaunt tablet was unreadable with verdigris, the front has very minor pitting and stain in daylight light after a light clean.

Hi Andy, nice find. How did you clean it the way you did without effecting the patina etc. No chemicals etc I take it.

Simon.

Hi Simon, I used vinegar and cocktail sticks then washed it with hot water.

Lovely cleaning job.

Keeping the Anson flavour going but not a badge or the battalion.
Here is a medal I have engraved "H.M.S. Anson Inter Part Soccer Winners CH. & P.Os.". Unfortunately I can't tell you any more about it.

A interesting piece, I recently saw on another forum a medallion which was for HMS Excellent thats somebody found in their garden. This was the RMLI gunnery school - I would love to find a piece like that!

Default Anson battalion

I know that it has a missing "prong" but is it a right one? There is a J.R. Gaunt London plate.

Hi,
Your badge has the signs (including the reinforcing strip) of being a good one but the colour finish is strange. Has it been painted?
Cheers, Tinto

Thank you for the information. No, it has not been painted, just photographed in poor lighting conditions hence the strange hue.

Default Anson Badge

Hello All,
I have the option of returning this badge so would like opinions. It is shaped to fit the cap so may look rather distorted and is unbendable.
Regards,
Bill.
