November 9th 1916
Any ideas what the date on this City of London badge may refer to, please?
DSCF4126.jpg DSCF4127.jpg Could it be Great War-related? With thanks, Peter. |

This date marked the end of the Third stage of the Somme?
No idea how this would tie in, but seems the only possible to me? Cheers, Neil |

Thanks for your reply, Neil. Certainly something to bear in mind, but as you say, tying this event in specifically to the CoL is puzzling.

Hi Peter, Neil,
Were there any Zeppelin raids on London at this time? Regards, Tinto |

Just Googled that idea, and from what I can tell it looks as though London raids did not occur throughout November of that year. I have not conducted an exhaustive search, but this was the initial finding. Good thinking though, thank you. PJ |

Thanks Voltigeur,
A very intersting list there. The only CoL-realted item I can see is the Guildhall speech my Mr. Asquith. It'd be nice to think that a commemorative badge was manufactured as a result, but I can't see it somehow. Thank you. PJ |

Were not the London Divisions (47th & 56th) involved in the Somme fighting?

November 9th 1916
Peter,
Perhaps KLR might be able to point you in the right direction- I believe his employer is the Museum of London. Failing that theCorporation have friendly helpful staff in the Guildhall Library. They might respond to a plea for help. Stephen. |

Just a thought, sometimes badges have the date of the formation of a unit on them. Could this be something similar to a VTC badge and November 9th 1916 the date the unit was raised ?
P.B.

Walter Vaughan Morgan died on the 12th of November 1916. He was Lord Mayor 1906-7. Sir William Dunn appears to have been elected on the 9th November 1916, so i think it is likely that it is some kind of commemorative badge.Regards Phil.

My knowledge of London is some what rusty. I have corrected the date in my original post.
I remember that there is some sort of Mayors parade that occurs in London in November every year but when i checked a photographic archive of 1916 the event seems to of occured in August of 1916?

The Lord Mayors Show is if memory serves me is held on the second Saturday in November. The 9th of November 1916 was a Thursday when i believe the Lord Mayor started his year of office.I think that the date on the Pathe archive is wrong, as the parade of 1917 was certainly in November.Phil.
