Default Russian badges - 24th Siberian Rifles Regiment

Hi Guys,

I don't suppose anyone here would know what the badge of the 24th Siberian Rifles Regiment would look like?

My G/GF was their commanding officer during World War 1 and I would love to fine one of these.

Also, are they any good books on Russian Army badges of WW1?

Mick

I may try to find it (with my rusty Russian language) but are you sure it was 24th???

I just checked and there was only 21st, 22nd, 29th, 30th and 31st Siberian Rifle Regiments (polk - Сибирский стрелковый полк)

Regards,

Timo

Ok,

I think I found it:

http://www.regiment.ru/reg/II/F/24/1.htm

24th Siberian Rifle Regiment

Formed - 27th July 1900.
Regimental holiday - 15th August
Location - Khabarovsk (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Khabarovsk)

First called East Siberian Rifle Regiment (1900 - 2 battalions, 1904 - 3 battalions, 1905 - 4 battalions and from 1910 called 24th Siberian Rifle Regiment).

Insignia granted 6th December 1906 - St. George flag with the inscription: "For a fight on the 4th July 1904, in Liaoyang in 1904, and Mukden in 1905."

And thats one of the regimental commanders 1902-1905:

Letchki Platon Aleksejevitch (Лечицкий Платон Алексеевич)

Default Russian regimental badges link

http://www.ordinari.ru/shop_content.php?coID=16

This only shows about three of the over 40 Siberian rifle regiments as having a badge. Either the rest are either unknown or did not exist. Regimental badges in the Russian army were not like in the British tradition. They did not adorn cap or collar, and were only recently (before WWI) introduced one unit at a time, on the unit's own initiative. Many were only approved as late as between 1910-1914.

Have a look for the Werlich/Andolenko book on Imperial Russian badges as it is in English, there are newer versions of it but in Russian.
