Polish Badge?
I have been asked to identify and sell this badge for a fellow collector. Polish free forces? The reverse is marked SCOTLAND 1942 K&S. Images show the condition and screw post fastener. The felt appears to have been a recent addition.

Polish paratroopers were trained on the Fife coast of Scotland and had badges made for them by Kirkwood and Sons Edinburgh. I would not dare to comment on originality but I think this area of specialism is visited by the fakers. Having a Scottish wife I have visited the area and believe some of them like myself married local girls. There are plaques and monuments in the area to remember them. Cheers Dave

If it is a Polish Badge, why does a close up show a thistle,
surely they would have had something to denote tey were Polish. Retlaw.

Hi Retlaw (I'd rather call you Walter....), to add some informations about this subject. In 1942 some units (if not all) of the Polish Forces in exile were stationed in the Fife region of Scotland (not quite sure about that). Here is a breakdown of the units and their locations.
HQ Polish Army Corps, Moncreiffe House Army Corps Troops 1st Corps Reconnaissance Group, Perth 1st Medium Artillery Battery, Dundee Coastal Artillery Troop, St Andrews 1st Engineer Battalion, Dundee 1st Armoured Train Group, Norwick 3rd Armoured Train Group, Market Weighton 4th Armoured Train Group, Perth 1st Rifle Brigade, Cupar 1st Brigade Reconnaissance Detachment, Ceres 1st Rifle Battalion, Tentsmuir 2nd Rifle Battalion, Cupar 3rd Rifle Battalion, St Andrews 1st Field Artillery Battalion, St Andrews 1st Anti-Tank Company, Dairsie or Osnaburgh 1st Engineer Company, Tayport Searchlight Platoon, Tentsmuir 10th Armoured Cavalry Brigade, Forfar 10th Brigade Reconnaissance Detachment, Forfar 10th Anti-Tank Company, Arbroath 10th Engineer Company, Carnoustie 1st Rifle Battalion (10th Mounted Rifle Regiment), Forfar 2nd Rifle Battalion (14th Lancers Regiment), Buddon Camp 3rd Rifle Battalion (24th Lancers Regiment), Arbroath 16th Field Artillery Battalion, Glamis 16th Polish Army Tank Brigade, 1st Polish Tank Battalion, 2nd Polish Tank Battalion, 3rd Polish Tank Battalion, 3rd Cadre Rifle Brigade, Cowdenbeath 4th Cadre Rifle Brigade, Leven 5th Cadre Rifle Brigade, Broughty Ferry 7th Cadre Rifle Brigade, Dunfermline, Kircaldy HQ Central Training Camp, Perth Tank Troops Centre, Blairgowrie 1st Tank Regiment, Blairgowrie Anti-Aircraft Artillery Troops Centre, Coupar Angus 1st Anti-Aircraft Artillery Company, Burrelton 10th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Company, Cupar Angus 11th Anti-Aircraft Artillery Company, Cupar Angus Training Brigade 1st Officers Training Battalion, 2nd Officers Training Battalion, My knowledge of Scotland is limited to the time spent in Glasgow and Edinburgh in 1970, so I think all these places are in Scotland. So, I suppose they had a good reason to have thistle on the badge. Retlaw (Walter....) you would be quite surprised to see all the Polish Army badges designs. Jo

Hi Walter,
Here is a link to a Polish veteran's story. There is an image of the badge well down in the artcile, and an explanation as to the use of Scottish thistle. http://rijo.homepage.t-online.de/pdf...ser_willie.pdf |

I know the area of Fife in Scotland very well having spent many holidays there. Some of the places mentioned are very familiar, Dura Den in particular. Retlaw.
