Default Opinions on 6th Hauraki

Hi

I was wondering what your thoughts were on this one.
Compared to others I've seen the rear detail seems very weak, the KIA KAHA not coming through at all? The lugs look a bit odd too, I think?

Thanks

Colin

I am afraid it looks like something Bulgarian-made to me.

Hi Colin,

I'm inclined to agree with Alan although I've not handled any Bulgarian made New Zealand badges.

Comparing this example with mine, the bottom point of the star seems "blobby" ie. not as clear cut as it should be.

Geoff Oldham's catalogue has this badge at NZ$15.00, not a rare badge.

Cheers, Tinto

Thanks guys.

I wasn't aware that Bulgaria made badges for the NZ army? What period was this?
I thought that they were initially produced by Gaunt, then manufactured in NZ?

So is this badge not a dud, then? It's not a copy/fake?

Cheers

Colin

Hi Colin,

The Hauraki badge was made by Gaunt and other manufacturers and was worn in WW1.

Like you I'm not aware that fakes of New Zealand badges are being made in Bulgaria but given the large quantities of other badges faked in Bulgaria and elsewhere it will only be a matter of time.

Was there a price tag on the Hauraki badge you showed? Difficult to say whether it's a dud without actually handling it. There are better examples available.

Tinto

There WAS a price tag of £7 on it. Until I bought it
No biggie. I know so little about NZ badges I didn't notice something was off until it arrived.
I've been offered another one from a Forum member, so I'll live and learn

Cheers
Colin

Not easy to tell without a hands on, but it looks like a New Zealand made badge to me
When comparing the die stamped reverse of your badge to a number of NZ Reinforcement badges that I have, the detail is not an issue as they range from high detail to very poor.
The lugs do not have feet which is a good sign for NZ made badges, and the solder is also very typical.
I have a number of repro NZ badges in my files, when I get a chance I will see if I have a fake 6th Regiment badge.

Seems Geoff has one for sale that looks very similar.

Default Badge is fine

This badge is fine. NZ made example commonly encountered. I looked in my bag of spare Haurakis and have a number of them. Think this is later period manufacture. Have seen these lugs on many NZ badges of that period
