Is anybody able to help me identify badges and insignia as worn by SA troops during the Battle of Delville Wood, 1916 please?

It would be 1st Battalion, B company. I know the 9th Divisional symbol (blue thistle) was worn by 1918 but I don't know if it was worn in 1916. Was a brass epaulatte badeg worn in addition to the company symbol?

Phil

The SA Troops would have worn as a cap badge the "Springbuck head in a Porthole" badge as it was known with the Words Unity Is Strength above and the Dutch equivelant below. There were 4 battalions the 1st to the 4th each having it's own distinctive collar badges and shoulder titles were possibly the same with South Africa above and Zuid Afrika below but this was not always the case. There a number of variations to the shoulder titles, some are voided and others solid brass.

The 4th Battalion were the SA Scottish and they had a bi-metal Springbuck head with thistles as a shoulder title (this is rumoured to be an unofficial shoulder titles but rather nice and scarce).

Hope this helps a little

Brian
