Great Uncle George Som Li ?
Hello gents,
Four pics to show you. The first two although showing no insignia are two sides of a card sent to my Grandfather from his younger brother George. George as a member of 1st Bn Som Li was due to embark from Egypt to China in December 1928 as the back of the post card shows. The second picture shows members of B Coy 1st Bn Rifle Brigade in India at around the same time. Not too much in the way of insignia here either, my grandfather can be seen sitting cross legged at the far right of the photo. The third picture shows uncle George standing, now in China but what is the uniform? Regards to all Ry Last edited by Charlie585; 04-06-12 at 03:03 PM. |

The uniforms in the 4th pic look like King's Own Scottish Borderers, judging from the cap and collar badges.

Hi fougasse,
Thanks for your reply. This has me scratching my head as George was a Londoner, apparently enlisted into the Som Li and how he would have ended up as a member of the KOSB's is a mystery! Also is the stripe on his lower left arm for overseas service? Intrigued! Regards Ry |

The stripe is not for overseas service (they were much smaller) but for good conduct.

King's Own Scottish Borderers with Glengarries, McKenzie trews and, Scottish pattern (cut away front edge), Khaki Drill frocks girdled by Slade Wallace pattern belts. Both men have 5-years service.

Thanks Toby,
The KOSB museum has a very informative site and they hold attestation records for the period so I'll make enquiries there and see what come back. Regards Ry |
