LOUTH SCHOOL O.T.C
I have just bought, from a dealer, the above badge.
In fairness to the dealer, he couldn't say whether it was an original or a re-strike, simply that he had bought it from an "old boy" who was disposing of his collection of military cap badges. In the absence of a definitive guide to OTC badges, I looked on ebay(!), only to see that there were several Louth OTC badges for sale, at wildly different prices, but none of them claiming to be original.... My suspicions now aroused, I have come to this forum for advice: what should I be looking for to determine the badge's authenticity? My badge is bi-metal, like those on ebay, but, unlike them, is not solid, but, rather, "hollow-backed"; it also has "curtain-hook" type hooks on the back for the pin. Can anyone give me any pointers as to whether the badge is original or not? MR |

I have an original Louth OTC in my collection and will post pics tonight for your reference. Non-footed lugs to the rear, blank scroll, tabs joining the bottom scroll to non-smiling Sphinx are all keys, cheers Dean.

Can you post a picture?
Post #3 and #12 in this thread may be of help: https://www.britishbadgeforum.com/fo...ighlight=Louth If it looks like the type pictured in either post then it’s a fake. |

A genuine one. The copies have a distinctive face on the sphinx found on many fakes using the same sphinx die. |

LOUTH SCHOOL O.T.C
Gentlemen (I assume) All,
Thank you all for your rapid replies. I would like to say that my Sphinx's smile is enigmatic, but the puffed cheeks, and Luke H's image of an original, suggest that I have been duped. It would be good to see mooke07's pictures as final evidence of fakery. How much should I pay for a genuine Louth OTC badge? MR |

Mike,
It reads as though you have been duped. Original Louth are few and far between and, from my own searching for an example, the most recent I have found is pretty much £200................ As pointed out above, both the commonly found repro Louth OTC and the Grantham OTC are struck from a distinctive 'Lincolnshire sphinx' die. The clown face is the immediate give away. There is also a second (not as common) fake type struck from another Linc's Sphinx die that has been used for at least one of these schools. The fake and real example(s) posted by AlanO and the real one hopefully to be posted by Dean will settle any doubts/hopes you may have. Cheers Richard. |

It was a small OTC of only 50 members in 1908. |

Apologies I am working interstate and cannot get to my Louth OTC badge but here is a pic of some of my Lincs badges including it.
Cheers Dean

When / if I can get my technology sorted out, I will attempt to post photos of the badge (front and rear).
I had no idea that people were faking / reproducing OTC badges.... Who are the "forgers", and are they in the UK? I'm relieved that my St Paul's School CCF cap badge is genuine - I know that because the QM issued it to me, and I spent a lot of time polishing it for Parade! Fide et Litteris |

The number of OTC badges faked is not high but anything with a Lincs Sphinx or a Queen's Regiment sheep has had fake scrolls added. |
