Another mystery are the red dagger khaki background badges. Some theories are army commando to distinguish from the Royal Marines commando? There always has been rivalry between the two.

It is said they were manufactured for Army Commandos but were overtaken by disbandment of the Army Commandos - hence always found in unworn condition - speculation though - awaiting definitive evidence.

Some extracts from Royal Marine Dress Regulations 1945 concerning the printed “dagger” commando formation sign.
Also from 1971 when the price of an embroidered sign was (only) 1 penny. Tim

That is very interesting, I see the 23rd of November 1945 piece refers to embroidered badges rather than printed, what is the date of the second piece that actually mentions the printed badge?

Quote:
The document is titled "RMRO 1999 Dress Regulations" and states that "the dress regulations have been approved since 1939. So the embroidered badge was "regulation" at that time. The sub-section 'Commando Group' appears to have been marked up in 1945 as it needed updating. The second document "RMRO 2135" shows the amendments that have to be made to the first document. Found another document titled "Notes on RMRO" and in 1945 there is an entry about "RMRO 1999". 1999 - Dress Regulations(see also RMRO 2005/45 , 2135/45, 2156/45, 302/46. https://rmhistorical.com/files/conte...0on%20RMRO.pdf

Like most military documents covering dress and badges there are errors and inconsistencies. In wartime there were perhaps more important things to consider! Tim

Okay, thanks Tim, I certainly agree there would be far more important matters to be getting on with towards the end of the war than a little badge.

Yes indeed, I have never had one of those with any provenance, nor have I ever heard of such an example.

Here is pic of a printed, painted, embroidered black red and khaki red all to the period.
