Thanks Dean,

I have two of these, one with the same back mark and the other with a different Firmin back mark with the Conduit Street address included.

I have a good collection of Manchester Regiment related buttons, but regretfully I have neglected to learn much about them, unlike their badges and medals.

I do recall that i was told that these were Mess Waiters buttons though, rather than off a coatee.

Can you advise on that?

regards

Thanks Simon yes now that I find my notes which came from an old collection I bought (which I was looking for when I posted the pics) it is noted to be a Mess Waiters button. I have a huge amount to learn about buttons.

Thanks Hoot appreciate the ID, an attractive pattern for the 102nd.

Cheers Dean

I tried to reconfirm my original notes on these buttons.

They were purchased in 2000 not 2002. At that time the seller was located in Victoria.
The 96th was reraised in 1824, and in Australia from 1839 until 1849.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/96th_Regiment_of_Foot

Bosleys sold one in 2015, dating it to William IV, Victoria
https://www.the-saleroom.com/en-gb/a...3-a44a009c32fb

This book, page 126, gives facings and lace for pre 1830 infantry regiments.
The 96th has yellow facings and silver lace.
https://www.worldhistory.biz/downloa...istory.biz.pdf

Parkyn, page 270 lists gilt coatee for officers and pewter other ranks buttons from 1824-1830 with a crown, number 96 and french scroll without dot. He states that the design was replaced soon after 1830 with the one shown on the silver button.

It seems I have lost the dates I gave in 2000. Anyone?

Your 96th Foot buttons are a nice lot.
Hi manchesters,

Thank you for showing these buttons.

Row 1, 1st is a nice O/R pewter button, excellent condition for its age.
Row 1, remainder are a nice, varied group of officers' buttons.
Row 2, 1st and 2nd are other ranks Crimea buttons.
Are the buttons on the bottom row Mess Waiter buttons?
Row 4, 1st would fit in with the European uniform fashion of the 1880s. Do you agree?
My other 96th button is a small size, low concave button similar to row 4.

The 63rd Foot, again a nice group.
I have one identical to your row 1, 1st. It is pre 1830 I presume. Mine is flat, without a backmark. Its star is slightly smaller.
I am attaching a scan of a Crimea 63rd button. It is not mine. It sold on e-bay in 2000. Which of the 63rd button do you consider to date after 1855?

best regards,

Some splendid selections of buttons thanks gents - much to admire here and still appreciating the plethora of patters within a regiment. I take back all I have said about badges being complex even within a regiment relative to buttons!

Cheers Dean

btns,

Thanks for the info, but I'm afraid I dont know much about buttons and their dates.

As per your question, the middle two bottom row on the 96th are mess waiters buttons as per the original post on the thread.

4th row? Not sure what you mean there.

regards
