Hello Iain, As a collector of RE badges (and an ex RE never a ex Sapper)
I have never come across a GV1R cap badge with the "M" I have several that are either white metal or chromed BUT you never know, some faker may produce one. Jerry

Perhaps I'm picking this up wrong, but did you not post pictures of four GVIR Militia badges in your collection in a thread some time back. Two at least were Malta and Bermuda Militia I think in g/m. They've definately been faked though and I remember your post as I'd just picked up a possible ringer. However, I'd like to think this officer's gilt badge is the real deal. All the best Mark |

I had totally forgot about them (wot a plonker) My apologies to all. I keep them in a separate tray from the other GV1R badges. I have 6 of these with 1 in Bronze(bladed) 4 in G/M(slider & lugs) & 1 cast. I do not have a officer gilt version myself. Your officer badge looks OK to me. Again apologies to all & thanks again Mark, Jerry

So is there a difference between the RE Militia and the RE Malta?
And RE Malta perhaps only wartime? TIA Iain

Royal Engineers Militia cap badge
I have been reading this thread with interest and am trying to establish when this badge was first authorised/manufactured. A message from Firmin & Sons received today says,
"Within a wreath of laurel the Garter surmounted by an Imperial Crown. In the centre the Royal Cypher of - Edward VIII or George VI Across the base of the wreath a scroll worded Royal Engineers. Above this the letter M. All in gilding metal except the letter M which is in white metal. And seems to have been worn latterly by the Fortress Company, Malta (see Kipling & King figure 1944) Soldiers pattern cap badges were made by all the companies that have merged or been taken over by Firmin & Sons and they include William Dowler & Sons, Smith & Wright, J R Gaunt & Sons, Firmin & Sons." However, I know that there is also a George V version but was this after WWI? Does anyone know when the badge was first used and which units were authorised to wear it please? Thanks. John |
