Welsh Regiment? Civil Service Rifles?
Can anyone identify this unit please?
Welsh Regiment? An Ealing photographer, I know the photographer's studio location may have no geographical link to the unit shown, but 12th Middlesex (Civil Service) Rifle Volunteer Corps? |

Yes, the seller's asked if I think it is Welsh Regiment, it seems favourite but I wasn't sure when I bought it, still not.

I think the Ealing studio does rather suggest it's a London Regiment. I have lots of Welsh relatives with period portrait card photos and they are all very local for obvious reasons.

I am rather doubtful that it is the Welsh Regt. too. I am not familiar with that frock coat he is wearing as regular line infantry to my knowledge.

The 12th Mx/Civil Service uniform was grey, wasn't it?

Yes, would that have bearing on the colour of the frock coat?

It’s a distinctly line infantry pattern patrol jacket for all English, Irish and Welsh line infantry regimental officers. The bullion wire configuration of PoW feathers suggests the 2nd Battalion of the Welsh Regiment. Until 1902 the 1st Battalion wore a slightly smaller badge predominantly in white metal. Rifle regiments officers, including Volunteers wore a different pattern patrol jacket and pillbox forage caps. Too much shouldn’t be read into the London location of the photographers, young men from well to do families in and around the capital might join any regiment where they could secure a commission and often such families had ties to particular regiments that endured for generations.
