1st Edinburgh City Artillery Volunteers OR's busby grenade
Hi all,
A new one for me - 1st Edinburgh City Artillery Volunteers OR's busby grenade in WM (K&K 827, Bloomer 323) circa 1885. It has a long slider on top of a hackle or plume holder fitting to the rear and measures 95x47mm and there is some high point wear to the front. Regards Dean |

Lovely badge. Personally I've always preferred the detail on the Victorian badges.

Very nice badge. Any chance of fitting it with a plume/ or a "doctored" hackle - whatever it takes?

Interesting badge with the oldest slider yet known? Sliders otherwise didn't come into use until 1905.

Hi all,
Pleased you like this Victorian craftsmanship. I will see about a suitable plume but appreciate any guidance one can give but will do some research myself. I guess the slider was developed as the most appropriate method of fixing to head dress but I had not appreciated how early this adaptation was. Regards Dean. |

According to Litchfield & Westlake the plume should be white goat or horse hair and they were unusual in that they were the only unit in Scotland to wear the busby up until 1908.

Thanks for that extra info 41st, gives me a guide as to what I should look out for and just knowing what they would have worn is a great help to put the badge in context.

There's one with plume attached in my Lowland album.

Would that be the same type of plume worn on the side of the bearskin??
David Update: Just checked yours and it looks like a shorter version of a spare white one I have somewhere... |
