Default us rifles badge

I believe that this is a sweetheart badge usually worn by American mothers to show that they have a son in service, in this case in the Infantry.

They also did things to hang in the window etc.

One star per son in service.

If a son was killed the star became gold. There is also a "Gold Star Mothers" organisation. This was begun by the mothers of American "Doughboys" killed in WW1:
