Having spoken to the Colonel's son in Belize in 1982, I believe it was dated 1945.

Many thanks - that does make sense - it was a short-lived enterprise Regards Mike |

The question of medical support for Commando troops was first raised in April 1944 when the formation of four specialised ‘Medical Commandos’ each of 9 officers and 136 ORs was proposed.
Orders issued on 24th June 1945 to raise No 1 Medical Commando instructed that 1st Light Field Ambulance, RAMC, recently returned from Italy, would become 1st Medical Commando on 1st August, the formation of No 2 Medical Commando by the conversion of 6th Light Field Ambulance, RAMC to support 3rd Commando Brigade in Burma following thereafter. With mobilisation cancelled three days after Japan surrendered in August 1945 these Commandos had been disbanded by December that year. It is thought that the embroidered, probably unofficial designations intended for the Commandos were sold to the surplus market in the 1950s. They were quite common in the 1970s when I acquired mine, now passed on to a specialist collector. Jon |

Useful information Jon - it also explains why they are invariably found in unissued condition.

Loupie, From what I can see at the angle of your pictures I do not think they are. They both seem to lack the cocked first "O" that the real ones had, and the back of the red one looks like the spaghetti fakes.

Hello Loupie
The 2 Medical Commando looks OK with it's light bluish tint to letters - particularly reverse - see post 9 in this thread by Mike Jackson for better image Not so sure about the 1 Medical Commando reverse ... This is what you are looking for BETTER IMAGES WOULD BE HELPFUL PLEASE - apologies mine of 2 Medical Commando are not the best either ... in a rush, may try again ... but you get the idea Last edited by Mike B; 26-03-24 at 05:11 PM. |
