Newest of the new people....
Hello Everyone,
I'm not sure what happened to the last post, but I'll try again. I've been doing genealogy research into my family, and as most of the family (men and women) have served, I'm trying to get an idea of what their uniforms, unit and rank insignia, cap and shoulder badges and flash were like. Two stand out to me as the ones with the most questions surrounding them: My Grandfather, who joined the Royal Irish Rifles in December 1900, served with them until 1914, when he was attached to the Leinster Regiment, which he served with from 1914-1918, ws then transferred to the West Riding, and then to the West Yorkshire, where he was discharged in 1920. He was a Colour Serjeant. The RIR cap badge changed during that period, it seems, so which would have been the one he wore? Second is my Great Grandfather, who enlisted in the Royal Artillery in 1887, in the 3/1 North Irish, which apparently was reorganized in 1889, into the "Southern Division", where he served in Malta, and then in '98, transferred to the "Eastern Division", in Essex, where his record says "Became RGA 20 Gunner in '02. Same cap badge throughout? Expertise welcome! |

Welcome, the RA cap badge was introduced in 1902, before 1902 OR's wore the universal grenade badge or the larger RA shoulder title as cap badge and the Grenadier Guards grenade as puggaree badge.

Thanks- is the difference between the Grenadier grenade and the Universal the scroll? And is it correct to think this would have been strictly worn on a helmet, vs., say, a pillbox? Did the RA have Glengarry-like hats?

The grenade badge with a vertical pin and eye for the Foreign Service Helmet. Same design as the Gren guards cap badge but with a different fitting. Pill box hats were not worn with regtl/corps badges. The RA did wear NCO's chevrons on theirs. Last edited by Alan O; 11-08-16 at 01:54 PM. |
