Hi,
If you only want to research the badges you have, post images on the forum for advice, reference books can be expensive so if you do wish to own your own, hit the search box, towards the right on the green bar, type in ' reference books ' or ' badge books ' and there are several threads to help you. I personally use Kipling & King, Volumes 1 & 2 and others, there is another book by Colonel ( I think ) Hodges which is supposed to be the Bee's knees another quick reference book is Military Badge Collecting by John Gaylor, in reality, the list is endless but I hope these few suggestions are of some help...... For a beginner 'Military badge collecting' by John Gaylor is the best as it covers all the aspects of the hobby, giving advice on the different collecting themes, and is probably the most enjoyable 'read' of all the badge books.
For pure information and reference it is Kipling and King, though these are mind numbingly boring and a waste of alot of money. Noodles. Last edited by Noodles; 17-10-10 at 09:18 AM. |

K & K
I would never describe Kipling and King as a waste of money, expensive, yes!

If it's Canadian badges you're after the Charlton price guides... First World War Canadian Infantry Badges and First World War Canadian Corps Badges both by W.K.Cross are invaluable... pictures of caps collars shoulder titles plus pricing (although very outdated it still gives an idea of scarcity). They are both out of print but do turn up occasionally on ebay..... the vote for pre ww1 and 1920-1953 both goes to Mazeas ... to scale line drawings are one of my favorite parts ..... 1953-1973 goes to Cap Badges & Insignia Of The Canadian Army by Roy Thompson

I would recommend Kipling & King vols 1&2; Hodges' book has current British Army badges, all in colour actual size, but expensive at sixty quid; Gaylor, of course; Peter Doyle's book on first world war cap badges; Alderton's book on second world war badges; Maj. Edwards' book on 'regimental badges', I think it's called. That should be enough to start with! Check also bibliography/further reading list on this forum. David
