Maker marked Essex Regiment
Greetings each and all.
A request if I may; does anybody have any Essex Regiment cap badge with maker marked sliders please, also any maker marked OR style pattern OSD? Reason for the request is that for a few months now I have been putting together a list of dies and where possible known makers for this particular badge. Of those produced pre anodised, at present I have identified in excess of 2 dozen dies for The Regular Battalions; a dozen or so for The Territorials and 5 Economy. Three Maker marks only so far are Lambourne, Smith and Wright and Narborough. Anodised 2makers only, Dowler and Firmin. Theatre made, 3 unknown and 2 by firms, one Kharanjee, the other Bhari Bros. Albeit, it appears that there were a number of dies used to produce an enormous number of badges to the Regiment, it may also have some bearing on, or similarity to the topic that JT alludes to here. When I've tidied up the research and put it together, I will add a post on The Forum for anyone who is interested. Regards. Brian Last edited by Fatherofthree; 31-05-22 at 11:23 PM. Hi Brian
I have a F.N B/HAM other ranks Essex badge. SMITH & WRIGHT LTD, FIRMIN LONDON, DOWLER BIRMINGHAM, and one unmarked in A/A. I would put up photos but I do not know how to do it, sorry. Looking forward to your research, Regards Terry |

Not marked but I’d say almost certainly Gaunt. One of a number of mint examples I bought from the DNW sales when they were selling off the Gaunt stuff. It came with a 1st pattern MM’d Queens.

Would that be your ORs’ MMd Queen’s? (Sorry to digress, Brian).

Many thanks thus far chaps.
I've realised I made a slight error in my original post, Lambourne and Narborough are the two named pre-anodised marks, Smith and Wright is in fact on an anodised badge. Keith, many thanks for the picture and it being in all probability a Gaunt made piece. To add to this, as far as I can ascertain, the manufacturer of this badge, (which I call 11 8 11, based on the brick courses on the left block, central turret and central block, was that chosen by The County Association for The Territorial Battalions. I have examples of this badge for both Regular and Territorial chaps and I have yet to see a genuine SA scrolled badge on a different die. After The County responsibility was rescinded, other dies were used, whether or not by Gaunt or other manufacturers is yet to be discovered, although I suspect both options. Regards. Brian |

The marked anodised examples are as posted above, plus a blank slidered example. Fairly certain there are no other maker marked examples.

Hello Bess
Are your A/A Regular Bns small collars 25mm top to bottom? They dont seem to come up for sale very offten, I have a pair at 25mm. If they are the same as your small ones, I now know to keep a look out for the larger ones. Would you have any spares? Regards Terry |

Terry, the smaller collars ( 25mm high) for the regular Bn's and the larger ( 35mm) for the TA units. Both are scarce, the larger TA ones are really quite hard to find.
I don't think I have any spares, but will PM you if I do. Bess |
