Hi JT,

No worries. They've turned up with other stuff or been traded because at one stage I did think of collecting tehm9999999999i [NB: cat on keyboard has produced this last bit but I think that you can guess what it was supposed to be]

Cheers and "meow"!

Yes, I'll go and looked what I had on sliders.
I wondered whether Jo Bloggs (badge maker) made his own sliders
or
did they got them from a slider maker ???

I'm busy with Roman coins (just as exciting as badges) this afternoon.....

Hi JT

You sort of roused me from my computer chair so I dug out a few of the ones I have.

Interested in all opinions as to how sought after (or not...) they are. I was told that the Royal Welsh Fusiliers has had the slider cut so that it will fit to a tropical helmet or on a pugri. Sweat holes on the Essex are full of old polish!

Anyway, I leave it over to the Forum to comment on them. If anyone wants a better photo of a particular badge, just ask.

It would be nice to think that someone can use these.

Cheers

Hi

Ignore the T/ RFA title as I see that it is just part of a complete badge.....

Oh well, them's the breaks....

I suspect they churned out their own. The non-uniformity from known maker to known maker, especially with regard to sliders in the first half of the C20th, seems to point towards this.

Which links to something I’ve recently thought about… possibly a stupid question but what might the earliest-known ORs’ maker-marked badge be? How early were makers putting their names on badges made for the rank and file?

Thanks for posting. Somewhat outside my sphere of collecting, but still good to see.

Excellent. Thank you.

WO 359/21 - pattern book of 108 designs of badges for Volunteer Regiments; 1883-1899 is a cracker of a file.

Greetings DD.

Perhaps it was chasing the Mouse.

As to the badges you've shown, The Essex is a fine example of the first pattern badge to the Regiment, 1881 to 1904 or thereabouts, possibly a year or so earlier.

From what I can see the remainder look good, but I'll leave others to comment on them if they wish.

Regards.

Brian

Earliest I have is the fully voided 5th London pre & WW1 by Gaunt. I’ve had the Fattorini 7th DG in the past and probably a couple of their VTC’s.

The fully-voided LRB is a lovely badge.

How early would you say the 7DG is?

Just to confirm is this in respect to sliders only?

I know of Gaunt plaques on other ranks QVC KOSB and QVC Black Watch badges.

Luke,

The query was in relation to MMs on sliders, but only because sliders is the subject of the thread. Great to have any other pertinent info as well. All grist to the mill, mate. Keep it coming

Potentially F.Starr Putney may be the first then with the Wandsworth Pals. I believe they were raised in 1915. Understand the first batch was claimed to have the rear impressed mark and the second the stamped slider, no idea how far apart these were or if that sequence is correct.
