Looking at the badge, I would have thought it was contemporary to the 457th Bomb Group USAAF, it certainly has very considerable age to it, a very nice thing.

It certainly is, I'd have bought without real thought, it is a very handsome badge, the tiny Boeing B17 is a particularly nice touch.

That is a rather rare DUI (distinctive unit insignia), or what we simply refer to as DI, for this 8th AAF unit. How did you come across it?

Just an observation. The attachment pin on the back is of more current manufacture typically seen on enameled badges from the 1970's to 1990's, so this is either a copy or more representative of the 457th Operations Group activated on 1 July 1993 and inactivated 01 October 1994

Could it be an "Association" item ? Found a photo of an original 457th Bomb Group patch.

The catch appears little more than a piece of wire, but, looking at the reverse photograph, the actual pin/hinge is no different than often found on wartime sweet heart brooches made here.

I would have thought your attached patch was intended to be worn aircrew upon a leather jacket and that the badge in the original post was a piece of jewellery and nothing more.

Was just showing that the badge was the same design as the patch the aircrew wore.
