Help identifying badges
Hi All,
Bought a lot of badges from another forum member and I was hoping if anyone could help me identify them. Many Thanks, Adam

Third from left on top row looks like the notorious Marsh 199

Mostly South African by the looks so perhaps post in the SA sub-forum?
RM helmet plate is fake. Royal Irish Fusiliers glengarry I’d need close up and pic of the back - these have been heavily reproduced. I agree with Tim re the third badge. 4th along is Royal Scots Fusiliers. The only other British badge is the Tyneside Irish which is broken and should have a crown atop the harp. The KOMR is genuine. Just seen there’s a Welch Fusiliers hiding in there too... it looks very modern. Last edited by Luke H; 27-08-19 at 11:49 PM. |

Yes mostly SA, but there are some Indian, New Zealand, Malta, UK and Europea items as well. President Steyn Regiment with solid background is a fake. These appeared around the 80's so probably someone had access to the dies.

As you can see a solid badge and his catalogue of fakes appeared in the 1980s so no coincidence. |

That's great confirmation. These RPS copy/fake badges are also seen with a slider which the originals never had. Similar SA badges that came out as fakes in the 80's include a WWI period SAMC badge amoungst others. Would you be able to tell what other SA badges Mr Marsh had for sale in his catalogue in the 1980s? It would be nice for us SA collectors to be aware of these as I am sure some of them has landed on our shores over the years. Regards Steven |

South African badges, with approximate dates. I can't comment on the authenticity of any of the badges :
Row 1 : 5 = Prince Alfred's Guard (pre-1964); 6-7 = Administrative Services Corps (1954); 8 = Regiment Bloemspruit (1960s). Row 2 : 1 = SA Artillery (1930s-59); 3 = Regiment President Steyn; 4-5 = Kimberley Regiment; 6 = Native Military Corps (WW II). Row 3 : 3 = SA Intelligence Corps (1980s); 4 = SA Engineer Corps (pre-1959); 5-7 = Defence Rifle Associations (1920s-50s); 8 = SA Infantry Corps (1954); 9 = Regiment Oos-Rand (1960s). Row 4 : 1 = SA Corps of Military Police (1959); 4 = Regiment Langenhoven (1960s); 5 = SA Air Force; 6 = Warrant Officer I rank badge (1921-2002); 7 = SA Ordnance Corps (1930s); 8 = Regiment President Kruger (1950s). Row 5 : 1-3 and 5 = SA Air Force (pre-1959); 6-7 SA Infantry Corps collars; 8 = SA collar title (1950s-70s); 9 = Regiment De la Rey (right collar). Army wore gold-coloured badges until the mid-1970s, when most were changed to chrome.

Yes the SAMC is amongst the catalogs albeit the scan of the badge is very poor I doubt it would be possible to discern which die it was from. Send me a friend request and you can view the album. I have just completed the first one. There is another on its way which is 3 volumes so there may be more SA badges in there. Regards, Luke |

Thank you all for the help. It is much appreciated. Will be posting in the SA sub forum in the coming days, especially when the badges arrive.
Thanks again, Adam
