Those are nice. The officers cap badge goes on the blue/red No 1 dress cap. But where are the collars worn? They are not SD or No I Dress. And teh backing looks odd to me.

Malc,
I have a pair of those collars also, without backings though, and would be very interested in finding out their specified dress ID also. Here are some more Cap examples for the main thread.......... All fairly modern, but all very different. 1. Silver coloured a/a ,slider marked 'Firmin London' & no extra wheel 2. Silver coloured a/a ,2 lugs(on main scroll)no marks ,riveted on extra wheel 3. Silver coloured a/a ,3/4 size, slider by 'Firmin London' no back detail,no grass pattern on ground ,riveted on extra wheel 4. Gilt coloured a/a , slider by 'Dowler Birmingham' ,no grass pattern, riveted on extra wheel 5. Gilt coloured new metal type, slider by 'J.R.Gaunt B'Ham', no grass pattern, extra wheel attached by a bent metal central pin All these badges are 65mm wide x 48mm high except for no.3 which is 52mmx40mm Gilt = brass coloured, not Officer's Gilt here. The last 3 also show a more simplified version( most recent ? ) of the trail, with no chains, lifting handles or towing ring,as appears on the majority of earlier patterns. Sign of the times ? PS: have modified some of the earlier posts ,deleting 'Bandsman' reference, where not certain to be applicable in that case. Cheers ! Steve Last edited by dragonz18; 11-12-07 at 10:00 PM. |

Your badge number 1 is the 1954 pattern.
Badge number 3, is the older (1954) pattern with the addition of the wheel from the later (1965) pattern, these were made for and sold by the Royal Artillery Association, useing the Officers version as the pattern. Badges number 3 and 4 are the beret and cap badge sealed in 1965, the first production did not get the gold colour correct. Some still tend to be found in more of a silver colour. Badge number 5, I need to check, but, I think it was made for sale through the PRI shop when the DRA ordered that all WOs would wear brass badges. The small silver scrolled RA grenade (collar) badges were worn by some Officers in the Khaki beret and by members of some of the O.T.Us during WWII. Also worn in BD by 268th (Warwickshire) Fd Regt RA (TA) 1950-1956. Chromed or silver dipped CAP badges and RA grenade collar badges were worn by some Royal Horse Artillery Regiments until the introduction of their own collar badges c1970. For those of you who have a soldiers size Officers bronze RA collar grenade, these were produced by a company in 1989, for some newly commissioned Officers. They were of course told to remove them on arrival in their Regiment. Hope this helps. I have some dates someplace will try to dig them out. |

That is great information ! Most helpful indeed & many thanks ! Cheers ! Steve PS: Though this thread was started to show variations of the basic 'Gun' badge, there's no reason why it cannot be widened to show other types of RA badges as well ? Collars, arm badges, etc. Would love to see some more pics from other's collections ! Last edited by dragonz18; 15-12-07 at 03:23 AM. |

The Ultimate Gun Badge!
Here's the biggest and best gun badge!
It's a Victorian RHA officers Shabraque badge. It would have had a VR reversed and intertwined cypher above with a Guelphic crown above that and Ubique below all in heavy gold embroidery. Dates between 1872(?) to 1901.Prior to that the gun had a wooden and therefore rivet free carriage. Enjoy, Eddie |

Hi Steve,
I am a new member and I am finding your thread very interesting. You were asking for info on the S A badges, theTransvaal was worn from 1922 to 1961, the Natal was worn from 1902 till 1939, and then from 1946 to 1967.I know of a badge of the University of Cape town Artillery Regiment post 1963,I would think they would have been active probably in South West Africa and Angola during the Apartheid years.I am sure I can procure a photograph for you. Garry,
thanks for that information, it's a great help. Indeed ,any pics of unusual badges ,like that ( & more common ones also) would be most appreciated. Eddie, now that is a really great item. At 6+ inches, it has to be the largest official variation made. The embroidered Shabraque must have looked spectacular,as most do,but the older varieties of these must be few & far between ,outside of Regt.Museums, nowadays ? I have a pre 1871 Volunteer Artillery Officers Pouch Badge, with the wooden carriage for the 9 pndr Waterloo pattern gun, at about 4 inches long . Will post a pic with some other Volunteer items, soonish. I was hoping that widening the scope of this thread may well bring out some really nice items ? If your's is any example to go by ,then we are off to a great start ? Many thanks, Guys ! Cheers ! Steve PS: One of the books I have set aside for some 'light' Christmas reading is Litchfeild & Westlakes 'The Volunteer Artillery 1859-1908. Should be good, making it's aquaintence again ,after about 15 years now. Last edited by dragonz18; 16-12-07 at 04:24 AM. |

The Shabraque was used by all mounted Officers not just the RHA.

If this works you should see an image of a Volunteer Shoulder Belt Pouch.

That's a nice pouch - isn't it a pity the way patent leather goes so grotty as it ages! Incidentally it dissolves in meths and you can sometimes smooth out minor blemishes.
The gun is a lovely example of the pre-1871 Waterloo wooden carriage gun. Eddie |

If anyone is interested ,there is an o/r's version of the pre 1953 KC slider & lugs type beret badge on Ebay at the moment. Still a couple of days to run, I think. Made by 'Dowler's'. I've managed to aquire an unmarked one myself, recently. (Still in transit, here.)
Cheers ! Steve |

Some Volunteer Artillery items & information.........
I won't show the standard w/m cap again, as has been shown previously. Only to say that it comes in 2 ( or 3 )main variations for o/r's. 1. 'Volunteers' on top scroll ( already shown) 2. 'Volunteer' only on top scroll ( not shown, as I do'nt have one to show.) 3. Possibly 'Ubique' on top scroll ( now have some written info. on these ,that says they 'MAY' have been used also by the Volunteers, but am fairly sure they were also worn at a latter time ,by RHA ,etc.as has been suggested..... also shown previously) Officers wore same in Silver or SP & with a Bronze version for SD cap. Still ,on to some others, with pictures to help............. Last edited by dragonz18; 19-12-07 at 10:16 AM. |
