Default Wyvern

Does anyone have any definitive proof that this pattern of Wyvern has a war-time pedigree.

The first time that I observed this pattern was about 10 years ago when a well known dealer brought out the contents of a military tailor. The pattern has also appeared on a post-war BD in an article in the Armourer magazine.

This pattern is also much liked by repro manufacturers because they are so easy to copy.

Default Wyvern Badge

Dear REME245,
Please find attached a photo of 3 Wyverns all recently obtained from various official sources within 43 Bde (2 x QM's depts + Bulford GSU).
6 Rifles (HQ at Exeter) were created from the Rifle Volunteers who were themselves created from 4th Bn Devon & Dorsets and 6 LI. The LI company from Cornwall hardly ever worn this pattern of Wyvern, the lads being supplied or purchased (dont exactly know but could find out) a 'Cornish Wyvern' from another source - it looked more like you version. Again not 100% but seem to remember Bodmin Castle came into it - Regt Museum of the old DCLI? Their's looked like yours - more defined and seperated and sometimes came on a blue so dark you could mistake it for black from a distance.
43 Bde are linked somehow to the WW2 43 Div/43 Inf Div but again memory failing. The annual battlefield tour is usually to a site where the WW2 formation did its bit.
More than happy to find out any further info should you require it.

Thank you for the information but unfortunately your pictures have not attached.

The question whether or not this particular pattern has a war-time pedagree is still open but I personaly feel that it is very unlikely. I was looking at 49 pattern BD at the weekend badged to the RGH with this pattern attached.

Regarding the history of the 43rd Bde, the brigade like so many other similar TA Units is directly linked to its war-time parent (disbanded in 1967) through its designation.

There is a 43rd Wessex Association for members of both the Brigade and Division which can be accessed at this address.
