Default THE LIVERPOOL REGIMENT - KENNING MAKER MARK

Just a quick query.

Have been given some buttons and one of them is a Officers 19mm QVC button, back/maker is Kenning Liverpool which can't seem to find on the internet.

Does anyone know what date this covers, note as only collect Welsh then I will be selling the button.

Ta

Jonathan

Hello Jonathan

The firm of George Kenning was established in about 1857 and was originally based in Little Britain, London. By the turn of the century they had offices around the country including Liverpool.

According to one source they were "Masonic Outfitters, Goldsmiths, Goldlacemen, Embroiderers, and Ribbon Weavers". Thus they may not have made buttons themselves but were able to get the button maker to put their details on the back of the buttons. It is quite common to find merchant navy buttons with a 'Kenning Liverpool' backmark, less so military buttons in my view, so I would surmise that the Liverpool branch of the firm were, amongst other things, naval and military outfitters in this context.

If your buttons have 'The Liverpool Regiment' (as opposed to 'The King's Regiment') they will date from 1881 to 1922 - obviously the type of crown will narrow the dates down a little further, QVC 1881-1901; KC 1901-1922.

Roger
