My WW1 Cavalry Badges
Hi Everyone,
I thought I'd share my WW1 Cavalry collection. I do also have some questions. 1) With the 1st Dragoons, Is the KDG badge I have there correct for WW1? 2) What collars were worn with the oval 14th Hussars badge? Still have a few missing items so am hoping some people might have some spares to help me "fill in the gaps". Items I'm still chasing include: 1 LG title 2 LG title MGC hat and match collar badge pair 1 DG "eagle" hat badge and matching collars Thanks also to all the forum members who helped me out with these badges. Mick

The 1st King’s Dragoon Guards badge you show was introduced in 1915, so yes it is correct for WW1.
David Smith has the earlier pattern 1 KDG badge in his website http://www.britisharmybadges.com/home.php . It’s looped so earlier than WW1 and is very reasonably priced IMO. The way your 3rd DG badge sits makes it appear to be on loops. If so that would date it’s manufacture to pre WW1 to the Victorian/Edwardian period. Cheers, Luke |

So should my 3DG have a slider to be a WW1 period one? Also is the earlier period 1KDG collar badges the same design as the hat badge but just smaller? Mick

Sliders were introduced in 1906 so your badge, which I would assume has 3 loops, will have been manufactured before then. But that’s not to say someone issued with such badge around that time couldn’t have still been serving and wearing the same badge in 1914. On closer inspection your 10th Royal Hussars appears to be on loops to? If so same applies. Luke |

The collars are wrong for the 3rd Hussars, the horse should be the same size as the cap badge without the scroll.

The 3rd Dragoon Guards wore another cap badge during the Great War with a rather different scroll.

Nice collection Mick, though I do believe your 6th Inniskillings to be a copy.
I say this because windows in turrets unvoided and number of stone coarses above centre window. Just my opinion. Cheers Tony.

I response to your question about the 14H. This shows the 14th Hussars large oval cap badge being worn 1915-19 with the same badge in reduced size as collars. Now these collar badges later went on to be used as a cap badge with a slider so are rather ambitiously sold as lugged cap badges. Consequently they are rather expensive. The same design with amended title was used by the 14th/20th Hussars. Again the cap badge was slidered and the collars lugged. Last edited by Alan O; 19-07-21 at 07:58 PM. |

The 1st Dragoons, the Royals, tended to wear their little eagle cap badge during the Great War, rather than their "dog and basket" cap badge, but, I think you actually refer to the 1st DG, the KDG's, so you have your answer already.
In the case of the 14th Hussars, prior to 1915, they wore their much loved white metal eagles on their collars, you do occasionally see them on their patrols, but, generally speaking Home Service Full Dress had been withdrawn in 1914, because of the war. I think, generally, you have a nice looking collection, but, you do have to be careful, these badges are much copied and the prices being sought these days, for original badges do seem, to me at least, certainly not insignificant. if you are adding a regimental button under each of those WW1 Cav' regiments be sure to add a Leicestershire PAO Yeomanry button under the 4th Hussars, 5th Lancers & 16th Lancers for the post 1918/9 period. Also add the WW1 Yeomanry Regiments.... as they were on strength as Regular units

WW1 Badges
The collars as shown with the 5th Lancer badge are in fact 8th Hussars and vice versa.
