Welsh Regt Oddity
I recently bought this badge from a US seller on Ebay who was selling a very nice collection of old WW1 era badges. It is odd as it appears to be a geuine badge and is blackened -(professionally factory painted with an undercost) From the look of it it appears to have been made this way. This could be the Cyclists Bn but the badge is 3 piece?
Any thoughts Alan |

Hi Allan,
Looking at the badge I can't make out the makers name but the pattern looks very much like a the Lambourne striking. There is an illustration of a nonvoided pattern in Cox's Book ref.1540. Regards Bantam |

Welsh Regt Oddity
Hi Alan,
I have both versions voided and non voided Lambourne Welsh Regiment Badge and I dont think that it is a genuine blackened version of The 7th Cyclist Batt The Welsh Regt in my opinion. Regards Bantam |

What is it you don't like - the badge construction or the blacking?

Welsh Reg Oddity
Hi Alan,
The badge is quite scarce by Lambourne I was offered one at Nottingham Arms Fair many years ago by the dealer Cedric Hayes I delined and regreted it for about 10 years until I came across another and true to form like buses 2 turned up. Its the painting I dont like. Regards, Bantam |

Alan,
Like Bantam I don't think your Lambourne badge would have been supplied to the 7th Batt'n as standard issue. I too have a couple of Lambourne examples in my collection and believe these to be WW1 issue prior to the issue of the econommy badge, as the quality is somewhat lower than would previously have been expected. According to the 1915 Prov PVCN, the govt / WO, ie the ACD, did supply badges for the 7th Bn Welsh Rgt. But they may have been cheap wartime contracts !?
Incidentally, does anyone know when Lambourne's were operating ? It might clarify whether they were dealing with cheap 1st WW issues, TF issues or what (I have Lambourne 1st WW type of regular KLR and a 6th Bn KLR - the latter undatable really between 1908-1936.) Julian |

Julian,
Optimistically I think that this is indeed a wartime contract with a different supplier. The blacking looks contempory and has a proper undercoat. It could have been added later but I doubt it and if I was going to fake a cyclists badge then I would not use a scarce Lambournes badge which has a higher than normal value compared to a restrike. I have seen repro 7th Bn badge (with a separate scroll but one piece crown and feathers) and they stood out as just wrong with no age or wear. Alan |

Alan,
I think that coating a Lambourne's badge would give it better credibilty, after all it's not the rarest of WW1 badges branded or not. All it does say is that Lambourne were stamping their sliders before, during and slightly after WW1 when they became the Welch Regiment. Last edited by Alan O; 31-08-11 at 07:07 AM. |

Keith,
I will never know for sure but it is a good gap filler until (if ever) I find a better one. Alan |

What do people think of this one?

Alan,
stacks of these knocking about boot fairs in Wales, the lack of detail to the coronet which has been painted over and the fact that it is a two part construction, is what would put me off!!! It does appear to look old though? Andy |
