I dont know why they bothered. If MTP isnt suitable for combat then why didnt we just save a bunch of tax payers money and buy the yanks kit in the first place ? Suspect half of it is the marines will do anything to look different from the army lol.

Duh! It is MTP. It's the badges that are 'new'.

Default New Uniform for Royal Marines

It is NOT MTP. The new unifom uses a new camo pattern. In addition, has anyone noticed that many Royal Marines are abandoning the SA80 and adopting Canadian weapon?

From Wiki (so don't know how accurate) :

"The UK’s Royal Marines announced in June 2020 that they would be procuring new uniforms specifically for the Marines, taking them away from the standard PCS uniforms of the UK forces. Also announced was that the camouflage pattern would be in Crye’s Multicam, not the UK’s MTP. The Marine’s choice of uniform was actually the off-the-shelf G4 system manufactured by Crye. Having selected this uniform the option of using the MTP pattern was not open to the Royal Marines since Crye did not own the copyright."

Default New Uniform for Royal Marines

Just checked the details. The new uniform has been procured from the US-based firm Crye Precision. It is lighter weight, has a higher tear-strength, is faster drying and is more breathable than typical 50/50 cotton/nylon kit.

It also has a subtle change in camouflage design - instead of the previous MTP design the uniform now uses Crye Precision's Multicam Pattern.

The main objection Royal Marines have to the new uniform is that they now have to wear a White Ensign (albeit in subdued colours). Nothing wrong with that - many young Royals today need reminding that they are part of the naval service!

And 43 Commando (responsible for protecting Britain's nuclear deterrent) have abandoned the SA-80 in favour of the Colt Canada C8 Diemaco carbine.

Hi Grey Green Acorn

You got your information from the same source as I did! You were just faster than me in putting it up.

The cost per item is outrageous compared to MTP. It's a very expensive and very nice kit and has been worn by Hereford for years. The RM are trying to rebrand themselves as SF and the Crye clothing fits the brand - same reason for buying the as the Di-marco instead of the SA80 - another lift from Hereford.

I suspect it also conceals the fact that the number of Royal Marines is far fewer than it was a few years ago. More 'elite' - but smaller.

At a glance, are the two cloths noticeably different? Going by the clip is the American pattern more brownish? Regards, Paul.

I managed to use '68 pattern DPM until 1992- I notice the use of small dots around some modern cammo similar to the use on older DPM, is that exclusive to UK MTP? I think you would have to use MTP to notice differences as with '68 DPM when you could notice different cloth and recognise Dutch DPM etc.

Another question, would the support arms who are commando trained i.e. Royal Engineers, Royal Artillery, etc change to this new uniform or stay with MTP???

If British uniforms are to be made in the better American cloth then inevitable that use will spread beyond the RM. I'm sure private bought kit must be common as it has been in the last 40 years or more. I believe Canadian made BD was popular in WWII. Regards, Paul.

As far as I remember our MTP uniforms aren't even made in Britain anyway. The last I'd heard, the contract for their production had been awarded to an Irish company who outsourced all the work to China! Don't know if that's still the case though.
