Default LHR / ILH

About 2 weeks ago I had the pleasure of visiting the LHR HQ and museum in Sandton and met the OC, Lt Col Heinrich Janzen.

I was very surprised when he explained to me the current regulations with the beret badge is that Officers and RSMs wear the Imperial Light Horse badge. He wears the large WM version:

Attached are the OC's and RSM's badges

regards, Iain

Hello Iain,
As far as I was aware, old badges were passed down, within the regiment in the 1970's, I take it, from your photograph, this no longer happens?
Regards Frank

Hi Frank,

these appear to be new badges on the berets. And the regs were changed

The OC wears the large type ILH which as far as I am aware was last worn during WWII.

regards, Iain

This is the OR's beret badge still with the old Republic and ILH flags.

Hello Iain,
I meant that officers continued to wear the Union Jack and Royal Standard well into the republics SADF period, that was certainly the case, as far as I can remember into the 1970's at any rate.
Regards Frank

ILH was one of our sister regiments when I was with the Irish Hussars.

Hi Frank,

that could well have been the case but the Nats, as well as replacing the badge, also replaced the English speaking officers in the SADF which probably saw the demise of that practice.

Hello Iain,
What were Colonel Janzen's thoughts on the wearing of these particular badges?
Regards again Frank

Hi Frank,

he's very much a traditionalist, proud of the regimental history and was all for wearing the ILH badge.

regards Iain

I still have my old Crossbelts magazines which list all our affiliations. I'm reasonably sure the link with the ILH goes back to the Boer War but I don't know what benefits it has brought to either regiment in the modern day. Certainly I wasn't aware of any ERE swaps or other attached personnel but who knows, maybe it's just sending each other a Christmas Card each year and reminiscing about Houtnek or Geluk: "I say, wasn't it terrible how old Caruthers got his gentleman vegetables shot to pieces by those damned Dutchies!"

Did he offer you anything on the day in question, a drink in his office or even a small souvenir perhaps! (i.e. one of those badges!)
In short, was he a good egg in your opinion?

Hi Andrew,

I agree, in the photo, they do look like anodised badges.
In the light of the musuem / mess, Col Janzen's badge looked like WM.

I shall try and confirm that.

regards, Iain

Hi Frank,

It was an organised visit with (Col.) Will Endley and we had a few beers in the mess which is part of the museum, but no, he didn't offer and I didn't ask for souvenirs.... but he was a great guy, I liked him.

There was a Piper's feather bonnet with an ILH badge similar in size and design to a Black Watch badge which foolishly I didn't photograph it.
I have seen Plaid brooches before but not a bonnet badge.
Owen's has what he refers to as a Glengarry badge O634.
