Hi Brian, I always assumed Owen had been given a verbal description of this badge and made one for the book, I might be wrong. Mike

I cannot answer your question, these appear to be cast in a pewter type of material, and new to me. Nice by the way, must keep my eyes peeled for some. Are these in your collection?

The one I referred to is the bi-metal version with a Springbok head in brass and the badge in w/m, sorry at work and do not have my Owen's book with me.

Brian

Hi Brian, yes they appear to have a high zinc content, like German ww2 badges and a silver wash. the fixing is unique in being a metal bar with the ends turned up to take a pin. If it's not clear I can take a pic tomorrow if you want. Mike

Mike

A pic of the reverse would be great, sounds like nothing I have seen before on SA badges.

Hi Brian, back of badges plus view of my tank corps bits, also an earlier pair of armoured cars with the same idea. Thought they may have been made by the same manufacturer but in the first world war? If they ring any bells let me know. Sorry for wandering off the Pretoria Highlanders but they were armoured for a time. Mike

These are new to me, never seen this version of SATC before, I suspect made in the field. I see the similarity with the armoured car badges.

Where did they come from?

Brian

Sorry Mike, I meant where did you find them, in the UK or sourced from SA?

Brian

Hi Brian, I got them from a friend a long time ago, 20+ years ago. Incidentally they look very similar to the cloth SAAC badge you asked about a while back. Mike

Default new PH badge

Hi Brian,
Just posting a picture of my newly aquired Pretria Highlanders 1st Batt badge on tartan backing with yellow over green feathers.

This badge is all brass and does not appear to have any traces of a silver wash, even to the rear or the lugs.
My query is, does the feather hackle belong with this or belong to anouther SA unit. It has been tied to one of the lugs and was found this way.

Any assistance would be appreciated.

Regards
Steven

Just curious of the history of this badge was found in a classic VW camper van I bought from South Africa a few months ago

The hackle looks like it could be the type worn by the composite FC/CTH on the khaki Balmoral during WWII.

Yes, the hackle could quite well be the WW2 1st City/CTH version.
