Guys

We even have a Che Guevara Road. What the hell he had to do with Durban who knows?

The worst was the renaming of Edwin Swales VC Rd.....absolutely disgusting

Don't set me off with Edwin Swales VC, I actually wrote to the Bomber Command Association, the Chief of the Air Staff and then a very strongly worded letter to your High Commission in London.
There were only three pathfinder's who won the Victoria Cross, none of them survived to wear them!

Brian / Frank,

I didn't know they'd renamed Edwin Swales VC as well

The worst of it is, probably 99.9% of the population dont know who the new people are
I dont know what happened to following Nelson Mandela's example but I consider these renamings to be racist!

regards, iain

Gentlemen,
I did not know whether to laugh or cry when this matter was discussed on the ABW forum some time ago, two members, one of them in Pietermaritzburg, who you will doubtless be aware of, actually said that, "it does not matter" well, to hear that from so called "medal collector's" both amazes me and indeed, disgusts me!

A song springs to mind : "The night they drove old Dixie down" and a line "take what you need and leave the rest, but you should never have taken the very best!"

regards, Iain

Wow that brings back some memories, they never play that sort of music on the radio anymore.

Honestly Brian it really did upset me, I knew four members of 580 Squadron who all knew Swales, sadly, all, but one, are no longer with us now and Swales lost his life for people just like them, again I really am disgusted!
Moreover, I never did receive a reply from the High Commision, not that I was holding my breath!

Mike

Thanks for posting these examples and links here: nice to see these oddities, adds greatly to the general knowledge on this topic, much appreciated!

Brian,

no, unfortunately radio stations in SA tend to play kiddies music which is mostly really poor quality.

However it needs to be shown, but will remove if it offends the owner, appologies in advance.

Brian
Hello Brian, are you sure that it has been sent to you? as a matter of fact, this award document is in my possession and has been previously posted on another thread: http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...ad.php?t=36988 No offense whatever, but still it's nice to be credited...
