Hello Marc,
Are you saying that was always the case, without any exception whatsoever and if so, why were the rank and file of so many artillery units from across the whole empire actually issued with badges that had an applied wheel?
Regards Frank

For the Royal Regiment of Artillery. The brass badge with a mounted wheel was never a sealed pattern, listed in any inventory or vocabulary and therefore not an issued item. It was however purchased by soldiers from the Canteen, NAAFI and other military sales establishments. Very much like the anodised aluminium first pattern Cap badge with a mounted wheel and either lugs or slider which was sold by the Royal Artillery Association Shop.

Also I have not found any pattern for a brass OR's Cap badge with 3 lugs.

As an add on, a brass Cap badge with a St. Edward's crown was never issued, as it was superseded by the anodised aluminium one. There is a sealed pattern, and a catalogue number for it, but no issue.

Marc
