Default What are Prince Charles' medal for?

An item from the BBC NEWS/MAGAZINE of 2006 showing some of the Prince's medals and why he is wearing them. Kind of interesting.

Default Prince Charles's medals...

A very good question, often asked by serving and former soldiers when we see pics of him wearing the lot!

The sons of the family (at least when it comes to being shown in the media in connection with their military careers ) appear to have the surname "Wales"

I wonder how the Prince of Wales medals are named ? I dont suppose we will know untill they appear on E bay.

The Royal Family were known as the House of 'Saxe-Coburg-Gotha'

The name Saxe-Coburg-Gotha came to the British Royal Family in 1840 with the marriage of Queen Victoria to Prince Albert, son of Ernst, Duke of Saxe-Coburg & Gotha. Queen Victoria herself remained a member of the House of Hanover.

The only British monarch of the House of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha was King Edward VII, who reigned for nine years at the beginning of the modern age in the early years of the twentieth century.

King George V replaced the German-sounding title with that of Windsor during the First World War.

During WWII Princess Elizabeth was known as Ensign Windsor at a time her father was King. Prince Charles is known as 'Prince of Wales' until he himself becomes King, but I believe even he was called 'Windsor' during his Navy Service?

It is only the two new Royal Princes who seem to style themselves as 'Wales'

Charles medals are:

1: Order of Merit, civil version
2: GCB
3: Queen's Service Order (New Zealand)
4: Queen's Coronation medal [worn by Charles & Ann only]
5: Queen's Silver Jubilee medal [also worn by Andrew & Edward]
6: Queen's Golden Jubilee medal [ also worn by William & Harry]
7: Canadian forces decoration
8: NZ commemorative medal
9: Knight of Most Noble Order of the Garter

The Coronation & Jubilee medals can be worn by ANY member of the Royal Family born on the issue date. i.e. 1953, 1977 & 2002

All the others are in the gift of the Queen or overseas govenments

I'm amazed that in this day and age some countries still have monarchs.

That's about all I can say without upsetting the Monarchists out there! So I'll shut it.

Glad I'm from Munster, safely ensconced in a republic.

Edward I or III, can never remember which had also used the title Windsor for some medieval documents. Knew my degree would come in half useful sometime!

Living in a Republic it's only right that you should support that Republic although thousands of your countrymen did fight in the forces of the King during WWII and subsequent "small wars".

I , on the other hand, am more than happy to live in a Constitutional Monarchy as I find it preferable to having another level of grasping politicians to support.

God Save The Queen.
