If you gave compo sausages to today’s soldiers the Government may well have a mutiny on its hands!

I can remember living on tinned chicken curry for weeks on end, the little bar of pasty white (previously brown) chocolate broke the monotony and what kind of squaddie would ever say no to a compo sausage and "egg Banjo"

We used to call that "SCREETCH", only really consumed to mask the taste of the manky water we used to get. I think the navy call it "Limers".

Bit of research shows the following ingredients for "Snorkers, Army, Stomach, Marching on, For the use of, All Ranks", aka Sausages, Compost:

Pork or Beef Substitute; Amesphos; Glucono-Delta-Lactone; Sodium Ascorbate; Corn Syrup Solids; Monosodium Glutamate; Sodium Erythorbate; Flavoured Sugar Cure; Sodium Nitrate; Sodium Nitrite; Curing Salts; Soy Protein Concentrate; Dextrose, Powdered No-Fat Dried Milk; Sucrose (Cane & Beet Sugar); Encapsulated Citric Acid; Potassium Sorbate; Trehalose; Fat Replacer; Potassium Nitrite; Water; Fermento; Salt; Whey-Protein Isolate; Gelatin; Saltpetre (Potassium Nitrate).

Oh, and Saw-dust (Obviously); Mmm delicious!

I recognise at least some of these ingredients from their use on my demolitions course - nothing to do with the food, though.
