Thats what I thought when I bought it but on this thread http://www.britishbadgeforum.com/for...division+patch it's said to be postwar 25th armoured brigade 1952-57.Roger

It's the printed version of the type Marc shows on page 3 of that thread. I think Mike had them id-ed a while ago as post-war too.

Static Rhino, no tail = 1st Armoured Division, 1st pattern WWII.
That is what I have noted. Marc Notes amended. Last edited by 54Bty; 31-03-12 at 03:40 PM. |

Heraldry in War
Heraldry in War by Lt Col Howard N Cole gives the 1st Armoured Div as having a rhino with a curled tail. They joined the BEF in 1940 then 1941 sailed for Middle East whee it eventually joined 8th Army.

I understand only the versions without the oval are for the 1st Armoured Division, with the oval are post-war see also:

Quote:
Second World War British Army formation badges for 1st Armoured Division (and 2nd Armoured Brigade), facing pair, printed on cloth, H 1.6in x W 2.3in. The 'rhino', the most heavily 'armoured' of wild animals, was an obvious symbol for an armoured formation and there were at least three versions of this badge. The earliest seems to be a simple standing rhino. A later version has a more aggressive appearance with the rhino charging, often with the addition of a curly tail. Then at the bottom it has: It was carried forward after the war with 25th Armoured Brigade which wore the rhino in a white oval on a black rectangle. (Cole 1973 pp 32 - 33, Joslen, pp 13 - 15 Marc |
